THANK YOU ADIDAS!

Few may have noticed, but the stripes on the Canuck's sleeves did not match the stripes on their socks (differing widths)... and it drove me nuts. Adidas, the new NHL uniform supplier, has solved the problem for me this season by streamlining the look. Finally, some visual relief...

Gunmetal and Orange

A last minute pre-game surprise to everyone (including the players), the BC Lions unveiled their incredibly spiffy "gunmetal" third jerseys at home against the Stampeders on August 17. Unique, striking, intimidating yet uber-cool... the orange really pops on-screen too. NICE! These were apparently supposed to be a one-off, but the response has been too overwhelmingly positive for that.

Calgary Flood

This is not to make light of the challenges in southern Alberta, but the NHL team in "Cow Town" now has a good reason to stop using a moniker that commemorates the Civil War disaster that ravaged Atlanta (the original home of the Flames) and switch to a new name and logo that actually reflects Calgary's resilient response to a struggle of their own... even moreso, given that their home arena was flooded. Here is my take on the re-brand... (Come on, it's screaming out to be done!)

Yes, I am a hockey uniform geek. Carolina and Dallas simultaneously launched new looks on June 4. Both organizations spoke of lengthy development times and hundreds of iterations, so the end results are surprising... basic.

(That said, I do like the new Dallas logo and dominant green.)

5 Tips for working with your graphic designer

It’s “easy” to use terms like “throw this together” and “simple” when referring to a specific round of edits/revisions and a turnaround for a project, but you may not be aware of all of the “behind the scenes” work that takes place for that to happen... READ

What a PR nightmare

3 billion dollars. Ice bombs. Ice crashes. Increased congestion on the Patullo from all of the toll avoiders. Nice work.

A note to the Ministry of Transportation
(if they happen to be reading this):
Seriously, give some thought to tolling ALL of the river crossings, and charging a mere $2 per trip. That should even things out. Seriously.

1.01.2013

I have to confess... I've been in graphic design for almost 30 years, but I hadn't really noticed the Sherwin Williams logo until today. While driving through the west side of the city, I was so jolted by the sight of it that I had to stop and take a photograph. (This logo has been in circulation since 1906. I am sure that the original designers were trying to communicate something whimsical and metaphorical in an effort to encourage the general public to eagerly embrace the use of house paint to brighten the world. However, held against today's eco-sensibilities, the image of thick red liquid engulfing the entire world looks horribly apocalyptic.) Ironically, just down the block was a grocery store banner that seemed to directly take issue with that very logo:
